Quest for a Beautiful Mind: If I found out that this was my last week on earth and I could only say one last thing to my family, friends, and the world, this would be it. After half a lifetime of seeing his world growing darker and darker, Kirk reached a point of desperation where he begged God for a beautiful mind and for the sun to shine again in his soul. What followed was a series of life-giving discoveries of enormous importance that he describes in this video, titled ‘Quest for a Beautiful Mind’. It is 20 minutes long, but hopefully well worth the watch, and ends with what may be the most powerful prayer a person can pray.
Many people who have abandoned their faith in God and Christianity, or are seriously thinking about it, have brought up a lot of issues that have been an important part of their decision. In this series, I take a more detailed look at what these issues are and respond to each one.
Guilt and fear in Christianity: A lot of former Christians describe their experience as fear and guilt-driven .... something that taught them to be disgusted with themselves and other people. That is so different from my own experience! So, my first video deals with fear-driven religion versus my own experience.
Who and what is God?: Before we can even talk about God, it is helpful to clarify who and what we are talking about.
What does it mean to be human?: A human being is vastly more than most people suspect or realize.
Suffering-a philosophical view: Many people are surprised at what secular philosophy says about God and suffering.
Evil needs right: Why instances of evil and suffering entail the existence of an ultimate standard of beauty and perfection.
The Butterfly Effect: Why we have no clue what God should, and should not permit in the world.
What death tells us about God and eternity: We see death from a very limited perspective. In reality, it much more.
Why does God allow children to die?: The possibility that there are babies and children who are ready for eternity and must not suffer this fallen world.
The emotional problem of evil: This is probably the most difficult thing to deal with when it comes to suffering.
Why do Christians suffer?: Why it is likely that true Christians may have to suffer more than those who are not.
The Resurrection of Jesus-The backstory: The historical accounts of the resurrection of Jesus did not occur in a vacuum; there is a backstory that extends centuries back in time before that event, which makes the events surrounding the resurrection of Jesus in the first century, particularly extraordinary.
Resurrection-historical shockwave: ancient non-Christian sources confirm the explosion of Christianity in the Roman empire in the first century. The central belief was that Jesus had risen from the dead.
Resurrection-the empty tomb: What an ancient, non-Christian source tells us about the unusual circumstances surrounding the empty tomb.
A property of countable infinite sets tells us that there must be a beginning.
Just as a woman cannot give birth to herself, so nature could not have brought itself into existence. The cause of nature, therefore, must be not-natural.
Why a natural explanation is logically impossible.
In order to bring time into existence, God must be timeless. It is logically impossible for a timeless entity to have a beginning, therefore, it cannot have been caused by yet something else.
There are some significant problems with the idea that the universe was brought into existence by absolutely nothing at all.
Are there any grounds for believing that there is actually purpose and meaning for human existence that is independent of our own wishful thinking? Even if there are grounds, how can we know what that purpose and meaning is? Finally, how can we fulfill and experience that purpose and meaning if there is an objective one out there?
The question dealt with here is why God, whose name is 'I AM', who transcends time, who created the universe and the laws of quantum physics, and the galactic superclusters, actually became a full-on human being and died on the cross right here on our planet. What in the world for? Starting with the origin of the universe, I explain why he did, and why what we do with this information is the most important decision a human being will ever make. It starts at the 1:30 minute mark.
